This is an Email I received from my good friend Grant Hartman in Cabo. It hit home with me about the media. Turn off the TV and fish.
“Cabo San Lucas (May 2nd, 2009)
Hi Folks,
First the fishing
Its really good right now. The rooster-fishing is super, they are everywhere and hungry. We are catching them up to 20 # on the fly and light tackle. Lots of fish and lots of fun!
Plenty of jacks and sierra’s around to keep things interesting.
The striped marlin are starting to bite, but its not crazy yet, wait another few weeks and it should be going off big time.
Lots of Tuna on light tackle. Footballs for sure, but lots of fun to catch and it’s Sushi time!
Now the swine flu report…..
I have had a lot of inquiries about the Swine Flu problems in Mexico. I thought I would update you.
First off, there have been zero swine flu cases in our state. Baja California Sur.
All is normal here. We are still fishing everyday, and the shop is open. Folks are everywhere, beaches, the mall, walking the marina, bars, and restaurants.
I know what you see on the media has to be overwhelming. I understand completely, I even get caught up in it. Right now the media has us running scared. Big time.
I am not falling for it. The media does one thing well, they sell you panic so you will watch the media to see what’s up next. I remember after 9/11, I was glued to the TV for months waiting for the next big thing to happen, same thing with the Iraq war. Man, was I miserable, irritable and angry all the time. I had to turn off the boob tube.
I don’t trust the media anymore. When they reported Cabo was ruined during the last hurricane, we were laughing our heads off. All that happened is that we got a ton of rain and the dirt roads washed out. That’s it.
I just got back from San Diego, and I drove down from Tijuana. The place is as safe as Tijuana can be. I mean I wouldn’t walk the barrio’s at night, but other than that, no problems at all. I had my wife Gisel and my two girls in the car with me. I never felt threatened at all. Same old, Same old. Long ride, narrow roads, and great views.
The media wants you to think that there is a battlefield on every street.
So on with the swine flu scare.
I don’t believe them.
I would not travel to Mexico City, now that would be foolish. If I thought there was a threat to my family or guests, I would be out of here in a hurry and would email and call all my guests and let them know to stay away. That’s not the case here.
The fact is Cabo is Cabo right now. You can expect great weather, great fun in the sun, great fishing, and a great relaxing time for you and your family
Does that mean if I were traveling I wouldn’t take precautions. Sure I would, I would wash my hands every time I got a chance, but hey that’s a good idea to do every day.
I don’t watch the news anymore. I don’t need that daily stress jolt. I am much happier. Give it a try.
Tight Lines,
Grant”
